Cappadocia: Most of the rock formations are a result of erosion of volcanic deposits, and those shaped like these above, where a harder layer of rock has protected softer layers underneath are called peribaca (or fairy chimneys) by the local villagers. As the softer rock–or tuff can be hacked quite easily with handtools, many of the peribaca have man-made caves in them in which villagers have lived since the 6th or 7th centuries.
